MASTERING WING CHUN KUNG FU: THE IP MAN LEGACY
By Samuel Kwok &
Tony Massengill
In this book,
the keys to the Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu system are explained. The
three hand sets are shown in detail, along with the application of
the key movements. One of the keys to Wing Chun is laying a proper
foundation. The first form Siu Lim Tao (Little Idea) is the
development of that foundation. Here, you will be introduced to the
proper reference points for the structure of the defensive tools and
offensive weapons of Wing Chun. The second form, Chum Kiu (Seeking
the Bridge), introduces the keys to fighting application of Wing
Chun. While the first form teaches the correct structure of the
attacks and defensive movements, it is in Chum Kiu that the student
learns to “seek the bridge” and use both hands simultaneously, such
as one hand defending while the other attacks. Chum Kiu teaches
stepping and footwork, and also Wing Chun’s specialized kicking
method and the generation of power thru the correct method of using
the entire body in stance turning (Yiu Ma). The third form, Biu Gee
(Thrusting Fingers), also known as the (First Aid) form, teaches the
keys to recovery from the loss of a superior position in fighting.
Biu Gee training is one of the keys to learning to focus energy into
a strike. This form also develops devastating striking power by
combining focused strikes with the rotational energy developed by
correct stance turning (Yiu Ma), as learned in the previous training
of the Chum Kiu form. Also covered is the Chi Sao (Sticking Hands)
training of Wing Chun, as well as the key principles that have made
Ip Man Wing Chun one of the most famous Kung Fu systems in the
world.

Samuel Kwok
has been studying Wing Chun since 1967. After moving to the UK in
1972, he studied under Lee Sing. When he returned to Hong Kong, Kwok

awarded Master status in 1981 and represented Ip Chun for many
years. Grandmaster Kwok was the first to bring Ip Chun and Ip Ching
from Hong Kong, and introduce their teaching to the UK, Europe,
Germany, Australia, Denmark, and the U.S. In 1994, Grandmaster Kwok
returned to study with Grandmaster Ip Ching. He is the senior
representative of the Ip Man / Ip Chun / Ip Ching lineage in the UK
